With previous gift bags worth an estimated $27,000 to $33,000, the Emmy Awards goody bags are so good, they count as taxable income.
So in order to avoid trouble with the IRS, losing nominees and award presenters must either donate the loot to charity or declare their presents.
Note: tax evasion – not a good gift.
But enough about the legal end, what everyone wants to know is IN these so-good-it’s-outrageous goody bags.
Previous years have included gifts of jewellery, a gift certificate for a pair of handmade leather shoes, a holiday in Hawaii, a Maurice Lacroix watch, a Nokia phone, a Dyson vacuum cleaner, teeth whitening procedure, a crystal vase, a United Airlines upgrade certificate and dining gift certificates.
Actually we say previous years, this was ONE year and it all came packaged in a fabulous Dooney & Burke leather bag. Pretty sweet.
While the press team at the Television Academy tell us they do not have an official gift bag and do not endorse any goody bags, PR companies usually cushion the blow for runner-ups, not to mention the after-party gift bags.
Award shows are gift frenzies, everyone’s a winner!
We’ll be keeping an eye out for what’s included in the 2010 swag bags but in the meantime, our money’s on Conan O’Brien, Hugh Laurie, Glee, The Good Wife, 30 Rock and Mad Men.
